Anti-virus (Sophos)

Sophos is an antivirus program offered for free by the University of Idaho for staff and faculty to protect university computers from virus threats. Our managed Sophos service includes 24x7 managed detection and response directly from Sophos. OIT supports Sophos installations for Windows, Mac, and Linux machines.

UI Machines:

Current faculty and staff must use OIT-Managed Sophos antivirus on any university owned or managed system, regardless of funding source.

  • Windows computers should automatically install or be built with Sophos, or it is available through Software Center
  • macOS computers should automatically install or be built with Sophos, or it is available through JAMF Self Service
  • Linux computer install instructions are available here

Personal Machines:

Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni, and Retirees with a U of I email address are eligible to use Sophos Home on their personal devices for free, while the university maintains our Sophos contract. Activating this benefit is only for personal use, and NOT on university-owned equipment. U of I does not have any access to systems under the Sophos Home program and it is not included in our managed detection and response program. If the university contract ends, users may be asked by Sophos to pay to continue service. See this article for instructions.
