How do I report a phishing message?

Overview:

If you receive a suspicious message, you can report it as suspicious. The ITS Security team will analyze the message and provide you with confirmation if the message is safe or not.

This article outlines how to report a suspicious message for analysis in the following email clients:

The process to report a suspicious message is different for other email clients. In a desktop client, such as Mac Mail, please send the message as an attachment to abuse@uidaho.edu. If you have a mobile client, such as the iOS Mail app, you can forward the message to abuse@uidaho.edu for analysis.

How to report in Outlook:

Step 1:

With Outlook open (for Windows or for Mac), find the message you wish to report in your Inbox and select it. Find and click the "Report Phish" button in the Ribbon bar at the top of the window.

Step 2:

Click "Report Phish" to confirm you wish to report the message.

Step 3:

A copy of the message will be sent to ITS Security and Proofpoint for further analysis. Click "Close" to exit the confirmation dialog.

The message will also be moved from your Inbox to your Deleted Items.

How to report in OWA:

You can also report a suspicious message in the Outlook Web App. To send the necessary information in OWA, use the following steps:

Select the message you wish to report, click the elipses (...) icon on the far right, and click Report Phish.

Click "Report Phish" to confirm you wish to report the message.

Step 3:

A copy of the message will be sent to ITS Security and Proofpoint for further analysis. Click "Close" to exit the confirmation dialog.

The message will also be moved from your Inbox to your Deleted Items.

How to report in Outlook mobile for Android:

Step 1:

Open the message you wish to report. Tap the 3 dot icon in the upper left.

The message is reported to ITS Security and removed from your Inbox. Tap OK to close the dialog.
