Overview
This service is for Faculty and Staff to purchase information technology hardware according to the requirements in APM 30.16 (for an FAQ regarding those rules, see article here). In general, this means laptop computers, desktop computers, monitors, docking stations, printers, tablets, phones, and any computer-peripherals (mice, keyboards, speakers, etc.). Peripherals that do not include any data storage are not required to go through this procurement request, but procuring them alongside computers can streamline that process.
Certain hardware is considered "standard" by the University and a stock is maintained by the Procurement Office for better pricing and delivery times. Lists of the standard specifications can be found at the bottom of this article. Standard hardware can be purchased directly from the Procurement Office without requiring confirmation from our Technology Solutions Partners (TSPs).
Hardware outside of these standards can also be purchased for those requiring, for instance, higher RAM or additional storage space, or more particular specifications. Such requests will go through the same form, but may be routed to TSPs to verify the specs and ensure that everything requested will function and be supportable by them and OIT in general.

Hardware Procurement Request
This will pull up a form requesting information, but necessitating at least:
- desired hardware
- whether a quote is needed
- whether the funding is through a grant
- an index/budget number
- a fiscal contact
- a shipping location, if other than the Moscow Campus
Standard Hardware
Computer standards are reviewed throughout the year and updated as needed. Standards are set to meet the anticipated requirements for the next 4 years without degradation of performance. Standard Windows computers and peripherals are purchased in bulk to reduce cost and for quick deployment. There are times this is not possible during computer and/or part shortages.
Every computer purchased meets the U of I OIT standards. All computers are purchased with a 4-year on-site warranty with laptops also getting accidental damage protection (ADP) for Windows systems and a 4-year AppleCare+ warranty with limited accidental damage protection.
Non-Standard Hardware
Many models can be modified to meet specific requirements (more RAM, larger storage capacity). Make sure to mention your requirements in the New Hardware Procurement request and your TSP or Local Support team will work with you.

Common Computer: This system meets most needs across the university including using common Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.), Banner, web-based applications, web browsing, and many Adobe products including Acrobat Pro. Laptops include options for docking stations and monitors.
Enhanced Computer: This system provides more resources than the Common Computer. Example usage includes video editing of large files and analyzing large data sets that require additional resources including memory, hard drive size, discrete video card, and processor performance. Laptops include options for docking stations and monitors.
High-Performance Computer: Typically these are non-standard requests and require justification for purchasing outside the standard offerings. TSP/Local Support teams will consult with you to gather requirements to help specify a model and get a quote. Example usage includes research needs analyzing very large data sets and complex computations that may require high-end processors and/or discrete video/graphics cards. Laptops include options for docking stations and monitors.
Mobility Laptop: This system is for positions that travel or are going from one meeting to the next. They have the same specifications as Standard Computer but tend to have a smaller screen size, are lighter, and/or have longer battery life.
