Network General Information

Wireless Networks

The Wireless LAN (WiFi) service provides network access to technology resources used at the University of Idaho as well as the Internet, and Internet2 (I2). The wireless service is based on Wifi 5 and Wifi 6.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to use eduroam or AirVandalGold.   Visitors from other universities and research organization are invited to use eduroamOther visitors are welcome to use AirVandalGuest..  There are no usage, access or maintenance fees for the Wifi service and it is available to students, faculty, staff, departments, retirees, parents, prospective students, visitors, contractors, alumni, affiliates and vendors.

Wired Network

In order to obtain wired Internet access on your desktop or laptop machine, your computer will need to be registered with MAC address and corresponding wallplate ID, or where on the wall the Ethernet cable is plugged in.

If you need a port turned on in your building or need a special network service, please submit a Network Services Request,

Current Known Issues

Device Only Works in Select Buildings

This happens when a user with an affected device first connects to AirVandalGold or eduroam in buildings that have been upgraded to the new Mist access points.  These buildings are:

  • College of Education
  • Integrated Research and Innovation Center (IRIC)
  • Library
  • Hartung Theater
  • Albertson
  • Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI)
  • Teaching Learning Center TLC / ISUB
  • Administration Building
  • Memorial Gym
  • North Campus Communities
  • Physical Education
  • Alturas Park Annex

Afterwards, when in a non-Mist building, the device is unable to connect to that NETWORK.

Method 1 (Windows 10 and 11):

This method is for if a user is in a building where their Wi-Fi is functioning normally, such as the ISUB.  Note, try to have the user setup with both AirVandalGold and eduroam.

  1. Connect to the network that doesn’t work in other buildings.
  2. Go to the devices Control Panel.
  3. Can be reached by hitting the start key and searching for “Control Panel”.
  4. Go to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Under “View your active networks”, you will see the Wi-Fi network listed next to “Connections:”.
  6. The listed network should be the network the user is having problems with.
  7. Click on the network and it should open a “Wi-Fi Status” window.
  8. In the middle of that window, click a button labeled “Wireless Properties”.
  9. Another window will pop up, click on the “Security” tab on the top of the window.
  10. Click on the dropdown menu listed as “Security type:” and select “WPA2-Enterprise”.
  11. This is where the issue lies.  If a connection is hardcoded to WPA3-Enterprise like when first connecting to a Mist access point, then that device will only accept WPA3-Enterprise connections.  WPA2-Enterprise is still supported by all UI wireless access points and is still a secure standard to switch to.
  12. Press “OK” and the computer will have the user re-login.
  13. The computer should function normally across campus now.

Method 2 (Windows 10 and 11):

If the user is currently in a building they cannot connect in, then they will have to forget and relearn that network while in that building.

  1. Click on the the Wi-Fi icon on the bottom right of your screen. On Windows 11, you will have to click on it again on the menu that appears.
  1. Find the wireless network you are having issues with.
  1. Right click the network and select forget.
  1. While you are in the building you are having issues with, reconnect to the same network. You will need to login with your Vandal account.
