How to Check Windows Version and Processor Compatibility for Windows 11 Upgrade

The University of Idaho is required to participate in Microsoft operating system updates and improvements to ensure the security of University data. Computers operating with Windows 10 should be upgraded to Windows 11 to get the latest features and security. The Office of Information Technology will help users with upgrading to Windows 11 at anytime and continuing through next year.

After the deadline of Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows 10. At which point, OIT will no longer support employees on Windows 10, except in very specific and special circumstances due to the potential for regulatory non-compliance and data security issues.

These are instructions on how to check whether your computer is currently running Windows 10 or 11, and if running Windows 10, how to check if it's compatible with Windows 11 and able to be upgraded.

Find processor specifications & operating system info in Windows 10

Right-click on the Windows logo key (Start) and then select System.

To find the specifications of the processor, look under the Device specifications section, then Processor. It should start out with what Gen (Generation) the processor is or you can check for the number after the dash/hyphen to tell you what generation of processor it is. E.g. 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 or Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8500.

Computers with an Intel processor must have an 8th generation processor or newer to be able to upgrade to Windows 11.

Less common processors' requirements:

  • AMD Must be Epyc 72xx or better, or Ryzen 2300X CPU or better -- including most Ryzen 3 and 5 models.
  • ARM/Qualcomm Must be Snapdragon 7c or 8xx, or MS SQ1 or SQ2 model.
