How to Connect Your Mac to Wi-Fi During Setup

Overview

To finish setting up your university Mac (called Automated Device Enrollment), the computer needs to be connected to the internet.

But there’s a catch:
During setup, your Mac can’t connect to our main Wi-Fi networks (AirVandalGold or EduRoam) because they use advanced security your Mac doesn’t support yet.

Instead, we’ll use AirVandalGuest to get online just long enough to complete setup.

This article covers:

How to Connect to AirVandalGuest

  1. Start Your Mac
Go through the setup screens until you reach the Network screen.

Troubleshooting Tips

If things don’t work right away, don’t worry—try these steps:

  • In some older buildings, the connection may take up to 10 minutes

  • If the portal keeps popping up again:

    • Wait about 10 minutes

    • Then try reconnecting

Other Ways to Get Online

If AirVandalGuest doesn’t work for you, here are other options:

Ethernet (Wired Internet)

  • Plug your Mac into the network using an ethernet cable

  • Some Macs have a port built-in, or you can use a supported USB adapter

Other Wi-Fi Networks

You can also use any Wi-Fi network that:

  • Doesn’t use enterprise security (just a basic password)

  • For example:

    • Your home Wi-Fi

    • Guest Wi-Fi at a hotel, business, or cafe

    • A mobile hotspot from your phone

These usually work fine for setup and let you continue without problems.
