Artificial intelligence (AI) is a transformational technological advancement as well as a rich area of study that is full of both possibilities and challenges. U of I is a research institution at its core, and we encourage the creative use of AI. However, with innovation and discovery comes responsibility. As such it is critical that we ensure the security and integrity of university data and the privacy of our people while harnessing the positive attributes of AI.
Please be aware of the following considerations in the use of AI:
- Educate yourself on generative AI, what it can do, what it cannot reliably do, and the risks associated with its use.
- Do not put identifiable student, employee, or regulated data into public AI models like ChatGPT.
- Remain vigilant in adherence to FERPA, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and other applicable compliance requirements when utilizing AI.
- Specifically for faculty (see additional information on the CETL intranet site):
- Provide clear guidance on the use of AI in your syllabi in Canvas
- Consider alternative assessment mechanisms that are less susceptible to AI misuse
- Understand when and how to cite AI assistance, particularly in research or publications.
- U of I has developed internal AI tools for use in research and administration. Wherever possible, utilize internal AI tools as they provide important data protections. Internal tools can be explored by contacting Research Computing and Data Services.
- AI tools are available from many vendors, some at a cost and some free. Some vendor-provided AI tools are already approved for use. Institutionally approved platforms contain privacy safeguards and other advantages. If you are planning to use AI that has not already been approved, please submit a Technology IDEA for review.
- All university APM and FSH policies must be followed when procuring or utilizing AI.
- Carefully review contracts and subscription terms for AI services and understand their impact on ownership and use of U of I data.
AI is a key component in the university’s strategic plan and will be a driving force for U of I moving forward. Information on our AI efforts is continually being updated and can be found in future direct communications and at https://ai.uidaho.edu. Please direct any questions concerning AI security and data integrity to oit-security@uidaho.edu.
