Sharing Microsoft Teams with External Users
Microsoft Teams allows sharing of a Teams team and its Standard channels with users who are not part of the University of Idaho. However, there are some important restrictions to be aware of.
Who Are External Users?
External users are individuals whose email addresses do not end in:
@uidaho.edu
@vandals.uidaho.edu
- Or any other domain owned by the University of Idaho
Access Permissions for External Users
- External users added to a Teams team will have access to all existing and future Standard channels.
- External users cannot access channels of type Private or Shared.
- If the external user has a Microsoft 365 account, we may be able to work with their IT team to configure a B2B (Business-to-Business) direct connection.
- With a B2B direct connection in place, external users from the partner organization can be granted access to Shared channels.
- Standard channels cannot be restricted to specific team members — all members of the team have access to all Standard channels.
