Windows 11 In-Place Upgrade

If a pop up message stating that you are eligible for a "Windows 11 In-Place Upgrade" appears, it means you are able to upgrade to Windows 11 through our automated upgrade service. The steps below provides the details you should know.

If you see the pop up message on your computer, it means you are eligible for this service and you should use it as soon as possible.

Important: The upgrade process happens in three phases, 1 hour of which your machine will be unusable.

Phase 1. Content Download (1–2+ hours)

About 7GB of data is downloaded to your computer in the background.

Please note, if you're on a slow connection, it may take longer.

Most machines will download this automatically before the upgrade starts.

If the download hasn’t completed before you start the upgrade, it will take a lot longer.

Phase 2. Pre-Reboot Installation (About 1 hour)

The Pre-Boot Installation happens while you're still using Windows 10.

You can keep working during this time.

When this phase finishes, you'll be prompted to reboot (or it will auto-reboot after 24 hours).

Phase 3. Post-Reboot Installation (About 1 hour)

The screen goes black and shows progress.

You cannot use the machine during this time.

Once finished, your machine will return to the login screen, now running the upgraded version.

Options for running the upgrade:

Option 1 Automated Upgrade

The system will install quietly in the background. You will only be interrupted when the reboot prompt appears. After the reboot you will be upgraded to Windows 11.

Option 2 Manual Upgrade NOTE: Pick this option if you want to control when your update happens as soon as possible

If you start the upgrade manually using Software Center (please see screen shots below), the upgrade will start right away.

You can work during the pre-reboot phase.

To get a sense of how long it takes, if you click “upgrade” before lunch, your machine will need to be rebooted when you return and after the reboot you will be upgraded to Windows 11.

Search > Type: Software Center
