How to manage Mailman subscriptions from email?

Overview

Mailman is free software for managing electronic mail discussion and e-newsletter lists. Mailman is integrated with the web, making it easy for users to manage their accounts and for list owners to administer their lists.

Note: In order to ensure data is not anonymously accessed, the web interface to manage mailman lists and subscriptions requires university credentials, or a guest user account, to sign in. Customers may manage their subscriptions entirely with email commands. This is referred to as the email interface.

Warning

Mailman archives cannot be accessed through email commands. A user must have an account or a guest account owned by the University of Idaho to access the web archive.

How to manage mailman subscriptions from the email interface

Customers can send email messages with specific keywords in the recipient address (the "To:" field of an email message) to manage their subscriptions. The keywords are appended to the email address of the mailman list, with a '-' (dash) character between.

Replace '<listName>' with the name of the list for the commands below. For example, to join a list named "JoeVandalsList", send a message to JoeVandalsList-join@uidaho.edu.

  • Send email to a list
    • <listName>@uidaho.edu
    • There is no need to append a keyword for sending a message to a list a customer is already a member of
  • Join a list
    • <listName>-join@uidaho.edu
  • Leave a list
    • <listName>-leave@uidaho.edu
  • Send a message to the owner and moderators of a list
    • <listName>-owner@uidaho.edu
  • Confirm your membership in a list
    • <listName>-confirm@uidaho.edu

More commands and information can be found in the Mailman List Member Manual, section 3.2 'The email interface'.
