How do I restrict file sharing in Microsoft teams?

Overview

Microsoft Teams includes a file sharing feature and by default all Team members can view, edit and share files. This can be restricted by editing the SharePoint Online site permissions. This change is only required once for the primary Team site.

Note:

  • The user making this change must be a Team Owner.
  • A new SharePoint Online site is created for each Private Channel so these steps must also be done for all private channel sites.

Instructions

Open Teams and click on the Files tab. Select the "Open in SharePoint" option.

A web browser window will open with a connection to the SharePoint Online site. Click on the top right gear icon and select "Site permissions".

Click on the option "Change how members can share". If you do not see this option you are not signed in as a Team Owner.
