Overview
Departments and teams who use Google Cloud Platform services will need to set up billing for any services that charge. Here is how a Billing Account can be created once your group has been granted access to a folder in Google Cloud Platform.
Here is the official documentation for GCP billing accounts: Manage your Cloud Billing account
1. Log into https://console.cloud.google.com with your su- privileged account.
You may need to agree to the Terms of Service.
2. Select "Billing" from the left side navigation menu. You may need to click on the top left corner menu to expand the navigation.
3. Warning: Verify "uidaho.edu" is selected from the "Select an organization" menu.
4. If there are no Billing Accounts available you will see an option to "ADD BILLING ACCOUNT", otherwise select "CREATE ACCOUNT".
Example: ADD BILLING ACCOUNT
Example: CREATE ACCOUNT
5. Fill in the required fields and accept the Terms of Service.
6. Enter the payment card information.
Note: you may see an option to "START MY FREE TRIAL" to continue.
7. If this Billing Account is your first GCP resource you will be prompted to enter additional optional information.
By default the new Billing Account name will be "My Billing Account". This will make it more difficult to share with other team members. We recommend changing the name to a standard "Department-Function" naming convention. For example: "OIT-Solutions" or "OIT-Solutions-PCard1".
1. Open the newly created Billing Account and select "Manage" next to Billing account in the top right, or select "Account management" from the left side navigation.
"Manage" option in Overview
"Account management" menu item.
2. Select "RENAME BILLING ACCOUNT" from the top menu bar.
3. Enter a new name for the Billing Account and select RENAME.
After creating the Billing Account you will need to share it with your team. There are groups available which are automatically provisioned from Azure AD. These include groups named "Identity-GCP-<Folder>" and the privileged access groups "Identity-Admins-<Department>". In this example, the GCP folder "OIT-Solutions" group will be used to assign access.
1. Open the newly created Billing Account and select "Manage" next to Billing account in the top right.
2. Click on the "ADD PRINCIPAL" option in the top right.
3. In the "New principals" textbox enter the Azure AD group name followed by "@uidaho.edu".
- Select the "Billing Account Administrator" role to allow the group to manage all settings in the Billing Account.
- Select "Billing Account User" if you want to just allow users to link their projects to your Billing Account.
Warning: the textbox will *not* automatically search the Google directory and you must put @uidaho.edu to properly find the group principal.
4. Once you have assigned the "Billing Account Administrator" role to a group, consider removing the explicit rights for your personal account. This is done by expanding the "Billing Account Administrator" role and clicking on the "Remove principal" option next to your personal account.
