How to use the VPN with Android?

Overview

The Cisco AnyConnect client is available for mobile Android devices. This tutorial will walk you through installing and using the mobile AnyConnect client.

 Note: The follow walkthrough was made using a Samsung Galaxy S III and may not apply to all phones. If you have a different manufacturer please visit the following site for instructions on how to connect using the AnyConnect client.

1 Install the App

Search for the AnyConnect app in Google Play, and install it. Once it is done installing, either open it from the store, your applications or the Successfully Installed notice in the Notification panel.

2 Accept the Licensing Agreement

Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA) to continue.

3 Add a New VPN Connection

Select the "Connection" tab, then select "Add New VPN Connection..."

4  Input Server Address

You may choose to enter a description (if you don’t, it will be changed automatically later). Select Server Address and enter: vpn.uidaho.edu

Select OK to close the Server Address entry window, then Done to connect to the UI Virtual Private Network.
There should now be a check next to the connection "vpn.uidaho.edu."
Select the back button of your device or back button to the left of Advanced Preferences to return to the main screen of the Cisco Anyconnect client.

Make sure to enter the server address.

5  Sign in With University Account

To the right of AnyConnect VPN there is an on/off switch. Select it, and it will bring up a new window for you to enter in your NetID and password. Make sure the group is VandalVPN, which should be automatically selected. Click Connect when you have entered all the correct information. If you use Duo push, you should be prompted to approve. Otherwise, for more information on accessing the VPN with Duo, please see How do I use the VPN with Duo?

Once you have set up the connection, turn on the switch and enter your credentials.

6  Accept the VPN Connection

Once you have completed Duo authentication, accept the VPN connection request by tapping OK.

7 Enable/Disable VPN Connection 

If you left the name of the connection as vpn.uidaho.edu a message will come up telling you that it has been renamed to vpn.uidaho.edu (user). You will now be connected if the switch to the right of AnyConnect VPN is set to on and a key symbol appears in the tray at the top of your screen.

If you have problems connecting after carefully following all these steps, please contact ITS.

Your VPN will work, with the key icon indication on the top right of your device screen.
