Overview
The use of removable storage media may be restricted for users within certain departments to assist with compliance. Removable storage is easy to lose or inadvertently share with unauthorized users. The data on removable media could then be accessed and result in a security incident. Limiting removable media use helps protect sensitive data and helps the university maintain regulatory compliance with entities such as HIPAA.
If your computer or account has a removable device restriction, you may see a notification stating "Removable media is not allowed by policy".
The Sophos client also shows a "Peripheral Blocked" event in the Events tab.

What other options are available?
Consider sharing your files using the S: drive (for high-risk data) or OneDrive or Storage.uidaho.edu (for low and moderate-risk data). If you need to give a presentation, save your presentation in your OneDrive account, then login to OneDrive from the presenter computer and download the presentation from there.
How do I request an exception?
If a business need exists for a removable storage device, submit a policy exception request. OIT can work with you to identify possible alternatives. Exceptions may be granted on a case by case basis.
A device is blocked but is not storage media, what should I do?
If you believe a removable device has been incorrectly classified as storage media and blocked, please contact your TSP or Local Support team for assistance at support@uidaho.edu.
