Upgrading iOS on an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Apple iOS

Overview

Upgrading iOS versions may be required to be compatible with Multi Factor Authentication or to meet university security standards. Please backup your device before proceeding. Apple instructions are available here: https://support.apple.com/ios/update

To upgrade iOS on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, follow these steps:

  1. Plug your device into power and ensure that it is connected to Wi-Fi or Cellular Data
  2. Tap Settings > General > Software Update
  3. Tap Download and Install.
  4. To update now, tap install. You can also select Install Tonight, or Remind Me Later if you need to delay the upgrade.
  5. Enter your passcode, if prompted. Your upgrade should begin the update process.

MFA Compatibility

Although iOS 11 and 12 are compatible with Multifactor Authentication, after upgrading you must remove and re-add your account to Mail before it will switch to using modern authentication.

To remove and re-add your account:

  1. Tap Settings > Passwords and Accounts > and select your U of I account
  2. Make note of the items being synced to Exchange (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc.) - as this data resides on the server, it will not be lost.
  3. At the bottom of the page, tap Delete Account
  4. Follow the instructions to re-add your U of I account: https://support.uidaho.edu/TDClient/KB/ArticleDet?ID=121
