How do I connect to WiFi on Ubuntu Linux?

Overview:

This tutorial covers the basics of connecting to the University wireless network using Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is the most common Linux distribution in use at U of I. However, while the location of icons is different between systems, the steps to connect should be the same.

Connecting to WiFi on Ubuntu Linux:

Step 1: Select a network

Select the network icon in the top-right corner to view availble wireless networks. Then, select the network you want to use:

 

Step 2: Authenticate using NetID

You will be asked to authenticate to the network. Make sure your window matches the following settings:

  • Wi-Fi security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
  • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Leave the Anonymous identity field empty
  • For CA certificate, use the Root-USERTrust.crt certificate file (Found Here)
  • PEAP version: Automatic
  • Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • Username: your NetID
  • Password: your password

Once you have configured the settings and entered your credentials, click Connect

 

Step 3: Connect

If all the settings are correct, after 5-10 seconds you will be successfully connected. You will now see a notifcation:
