The University is no longer providing personal
web space. To find out how this pertains to you please read the notice
sent out to students, faculty, and staff below. However, for Faculty and Staff who opted-in to
keep their webpages web-enabled, you may now access your sites using
CIFS, SFTP, Dreamweaver and more. You may also learn more about
accessing your file systems from a Mac
or Windows computer.
Those users who opted-in, may now access their
site from a Mac computer using
Dreamweaver or
Cyberduck. Or from a
Windows computer using
Dreamweaver or
WinSCP.
If you need a web space for University related
business, as a requirement for a student class or University
sponsored student organization, please contact the Help Desk at
208-885-HELP (4357) or at
helpdesk@uidaho.edu for more information.
Notice: This change only affects personal
websites similar to the following:
http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~vand1234/
http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~jvandal/
For UI Students
Information Technology Services will discontinue support of
home directory public_html hosted web pages May 31, 2009.
8.6% of all student accounts have modified their public_html
folder--nearly half of these are no longer affiliated with the
University.
There will be exceptions made for classes requiring HTML
development,
but the space provided will be setup on a per class basis, not
per user.
We are working to migrate all campus computers from Novell
directory, printing and file services. Once migrated we will no
longer be offering this service.
What options are available to students after this service is discontinued?
If you are interested in creating a blog, sharing photos, or
generally developing an online identity there are numerous popular and free non-ITS services available to you including:
- Microsoft Live Spaces- No additional login/password needed as you can use your Microsoft hosted @vandals account! http://spaces.live.com/
- Blogger - Popular Google blogging system. http://www.blogger.com/
- Wordpress - Open source blogging system. http://www.wordpress.com/
- Picasa - Popular Google photo sharing and management. http://picasa.google.com/
- Flickr - Yahoo's popular photo sharing site. http://www.flickr.com/
For UI Faculty and Staff
In an effort to facilitate ITS migration away from Novell
directory, file, and print services, we are moving the personal
websites (public_html folder) for
university
staff and faculty at the end of May 2009.
To have your personal website migrated to the new system
please contact the Help Desk. As we move forward with this project, we will
notify you
on how to setup hosting space for classes that require web
development
and other university-related business.
Once the migration is complete, we will continue to offer public
web
services to university employees, departments and student
organizations
on a per request basis. All public_html data will be preserved
offline
for current UI users for an as yet undetermined time.
Please contact the ITS Help Desk at 885-HELP (4357) or
helpdesk@uidaho.edu if you have any questions about this change.
