Accessing your University Data with OS X

Accessing your user directory or shared space is easy on OS X. However, AFP--Apple's default file sharing protocol--is not supported on our servers. Nevertheless, you will be able to successfully connect to your data via SMB. You will have to setup each share separately. The following is a list of shares you can connect to:

  • Shared space: smb://files.uidaho.edu/shared/

  • User directory: smb://users.uidaho.edu/users/

  • Academic website: smb://files.uidaho.edu/shared/webpages/

If you have an academic website, then you can find instructions on accessing your data here.

To setup your user directory or shared space on OS X, follow these instructions:

  1. First, close all open programs.

  2. Select Go in the menubar and click on Connect to Server...

Go menu, Connect to server option

  1. In the Server Address field type in which server you'd like to connect to:

  • Shared space: smb://files.uidaho.edu/shared/

  • User directory: smb://users.uidaho.edu/users/

  • Academic website: smb://files.uidaho.edu/shared/webpages/

  1. If you would like to save the server address for future connections, click on the + icon to add the address to your Favorite Servers.Connect to server window

  2. Click Connect.

  3. A dialogue box should prompt your for your University credentials.

  1. In the Name field, highlight your OS X username and delete it; enter your University username. Enter your University password in the Password field.

    Credentials pop up window

  2. If you do not want to be prompted for your credentials again, select Remember this password in my keychain.

  3. Follow these instructions again to easily connect to both servers from your Macintosh.

  4. You have the ability to store an icon on your desktop which helps you easily access your documents when you're connected to the internet on campus or when you're authenticated to the University via the VPN. Instructions on customizing how you access your data is located here.
