Introduction
Information Technology Services (ITS) maintains a campus-wide wireless network, allowing all students, staff and faculty to connect to the Internet with wireless-equipped laptops. The University wireless network is now available in the majority of core campus buildings.

The wireless network makes it possible for laptop users to get connected to the Internet, check email, and use other University computing resources from practically anywhere, anytime. From classrooms to conference rooms, offices and study areas; this is a wireless campus!

How do I get setup for wireless?
There are several basic requirements which your wireless card or wireless equipped laptop must meet in order to work properly with the wireless network. Please read the following list of requirements to ensure your card / laptop is compatible with the University wireless network. (you may also call 208-885-HELP (4357) to discuss getting connected)

Once you have a wireless card and/or laptop which meets the listed requirements, you may register your system online through the 'Account Management' page or bring your card and your laptop to the ITS Help Desk in TLC 128.

What are the wireless network card requirements?

  • Your card or laptop *MUST* be compatible with either 802.11a or 802.11g protocols. If you have a card that supports 802.11b only you will need to connect to AirVandal.

Many cards available today support higher data rates and different protocols than the University wireless network. Most cards, especially those included on newer laptops will work just fine with AirVandalGold.

  • Your laptop *MUST* support an encryption protocol known as Wireless Protected Access (WPA 2) Enterprise.

This service provides an extra layer of security for your wireless activities.

  • ITS encourages the purchase of brand name products from well known companies.

Wireless cards meeting the basic requirements from the major manufacturers should work fine with the UI wireless network. ITS does not have the time and resources to test every card available; so, while we cannot guarantee all cards will work properly, we will make every effort to get you connected if your card supports the basic University wireless requirements outlined here.

Known Wireless Network Issues and Solutions

1. 802.11b only wireless radios are not compatible with AirVandalGold.

  • If you have an 802.11b only device, then you will need to connect to AirVandal.

2. Windows XP & Vista is unable to connect to the AirVandal network.

  • If your Windows XP machine was configured to connect to AirVandal prior to the network changes you may not be able to connect until you select the "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting" checkbox under the AirVandal profile properties.
