How to Access your University Data with Windows

Accessing your user directory or shared space is easy on Windows. You will be able to successfully connect to your data automatically using Active Directory authentication.  If you would like to connect manually, you will have to setup each share separately. The following is a list of shares you can connect to:

  • Shared space: \\files.uidaho.edu\shared\

  • User directory: \\users.uidaho.edu\users\

  • Academic website: \\files.uidaho.edu\shared\webpages\

If you have an academic website then you can find instructions on accessing your data here.

Below is information on how your shares are automatically mapped through Active Directory or Local Computer Authentication. However, you may also access your shares manually. Please select from one of the options below if you would like to know how to access your files manually:

Active Directory

By far the easiest way to access your data is to authenticate to Active Directory when you logon to your computer. If you are authenticating to Active Directory, then two drive letters should appear: U:\ and S:\. The U:\ mapping houses your user directory, while the S:\ mapping contains shared space data you have access to. If you do not already have Active Directory authentication setup on your computer please contact your department's system administrator or the ITS Help Desk before changing settings.

Local Computer Authentication

Since Novell required a local account, the majority of computers on campus are setup to access files and programs on your computer by authenticating locally to your computer. If you do not have the S:\ or U:\ drives mapped to your local machine, you can use the quickConnect Tool to connect to these shares. First, to check if you have drives already mapped follow these instructions:

  1. Click on the Start menu.

  2. Right-click on (My) Computer and select Explore from the contextual menu.

  3. Under Network Drives, confirm the U:\ and S:\ drives exist. If they don't exist, then follow the quickConnect instructions here.

Start menu, right click on computer option, select Explore from drop down menu
